Sculpture

chasing light and shade

My sculpture is based on the human head and ranges from portraits to less literal interpretations.

In portraits I strive to capture something of the individual beyond the physical appearance, it is a process which I love. My less literal work is largely an intuitive journey; an exploration of sculptural form, texture and mark making while still striving to capture something of the human condition.

I work initially in clay; which may then be fired to create a finished work in ceramic earthstone; or cast into bronze, cement fondue or plaster.

The making process is so much more than a means to an end. For me sculpting forms a conversation between material, subject and maker; one in which I am continually searching for the light and shade to define the form, while also striving to create a meaningful relationship between form and texture. The finished surface texture of my work is intentionally a direct and honest reflection of this process: a visible finger print, scrap of a tool or pat of a clay.

I work intuitively. I am fascinated by the potential for the physical to convey the non- physical; and how art has the potential to evoke an emotional response.

About imageAbout image
I live and work in rural Perthshire, one hour north of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Please do feel free to contact me if you have any enquiry about my work; purchasing work or a potential commission.

Should you be interested in a potential portrait or commission I would be happy to discuss any requirements or aspirations that you may have. With portraits although ideally I would work from real life, this is often not practical and I can also work from photos and video.
My portraits and sculpture range from a small hand held piece to life size, or larger; and my work ranges in character from the realistic to more interpretative and impressionistic pieces. Materials range from fired ceramic to cast plaster or bronze, all these can be discussed; and obviously they effect the potential time, materials and cost involved.
